St. Paul, Minnesota, was established in 1849 and was initially named Puant, which translates to “burnt-out fire” in the Dakota Sioux language. The city became St. Paul in 1854 when it was incorporated, honoring the first Roman Catholic bishop of the area. The city’s history is just as rich as the culture and is filled with many stories of the Native American Sioux tribe and European settlers. The Sioux Nation consisted of members of the Mdewakanton, Wahpekute, Sisseton, and Wahpeton bands of the Lakota Sioux Tribe. These were the first inhabitants of the city and were the ones to instill their beliefs and customs in the people around them. Learn more about Discovering the Charm of Columbia Heights, MN.
