You may see hail in Minnesota anytime from around April until October, but summer is actually the most common season for hail. While this may come as a surprise for some, it comes down to how hail is formed.

Hail forms when rain gets pushed back into the cloud by a thunderstorm's updraft. The extreme temperatures and pressure cause the water to freeze into hail. More water gets layered onto the hail every time it is pushed back into the cloud. Eventually, it will fall once it becomes too heavy to stay in the cloud or the updraft slows down. 

Hailstorms happen unexpectedly and cause serious damage to your home. Here are some areas you can take steps to minimize the damage.

Roof - Routine inspections can help spot potential problems and ensure your roof is still in good working condition. If you live in a hail-prone area, you may want to consider impact-resistant shingles for your next roof replacement. 

Siding - Nonengineered siding such as vinyl, aluminum, or stucco can be prone to chips, dents, or holes when struck with large enough hail. Choosing steel siding or siding rated for hail resistance can save you time and money when it comes to hail damage.

Windows - The most common way to protect your windows from hail is by closing them off with shutters. During a storm, we also recommend closing your drapes and blinds to prevent the chance of any broken glass or debris from entering your home. You can also look to purchase windows with wind and impact resistance.

Outside - There are also a few things you can do outside your home to help. We recommend trimming your trees and removing dead branches to prevent them from breaking free and damaging your home. You should also move sensitive items inside like cars and furniture. You can also cover your garden with blankets or even turn your garbage can over them.
